How are you welcoming spring? |
I'm sure you've all heard; spring has arrived! It came yesterday at 12:57 p.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) at the exact moment when the earth's tilt was neither toward nor away from the
sun, which meant that exactly half of the earth's surface had daylight
while the other half was in darkness at that exact moment. Because of
this, yesterday had about an equal amount of day and night. This is known as
the spring equinox for us in the Northern Hemisphere. (If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you had the fall or autumnal equinox.)
It's good to know this astronomical fact, isn't it? It sounds cool, but after a brutally frigid and snowy winter, most of us are simply happy that spring is finally here and warmer weather is on its way. :-)
- TILT - slant; lean
- ASTRONOMICAL - regarding the stars & planets
- BRUTAL - tough; difficult
- FRIGID - freezing; very cold
What comes to mind when you think of spring? Let us know! Comment below, on the NYLC page on Facebook, or @NYLangCenter on Twitter. We hope to hear from you!
