FREE Admission- BAMcafe Live

Another live music venue without a cover-charge or drink minimum!

BAMcafé Live
For more than a decade, BAMcafé Live has served as a launching pad for some seriously talented musicians (like Antibalas, Carl Hancock Rux and Morley). But this is one proving ground without a drink minimum or cover charge. On Friday 14 and Saturday 15, hear a melting pot of musical styles, including the hip-hop sounds of Ghana-born Blitz the Ambassador and the Afro-Caribbean fusion beats of the Earthman Experience. Make a day out of it by catching a flick at BAM’s Rose Cinemas beforehand; show your ticket stub in the café and get $1 off your drink order. 30 Lafayette Ave between Ashland Pl and St. Felix St, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (718-636-4100, bam.org). Fri, Sat 9pm.

NYC's Winter Jazz Festival

Jazz clubs have always been an essence to NYC's character. So much, that they're now offering festivals in both summer and winter. Check out some of Time Out NY's must-see performances during this years' Winter Jazz Festival.

This year’s seventh edition features a dizzying 60-plus sets over two nights—here are five not to miss.
Chico Hamilton
(Le) Poisson Rouge; Fri 7
The esteemed drummer, who turns 90 in 2011, offers a master class in sensitive propulsion.

Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth
Kenny's Castaways; Fri 7
Bassist-composer Chris Lightcap presents music from his long-time-coming third LP, Deluxe, a marvel of dreamy lyricism.

Matana Roberts
Zinc Bar; Fri 7
An imaginative saxist who sings, sobs and wails through her horn, Roberts will take the stage unaccompanied tonight. Brace yourself.
Aethereal Bace—3rd Eye
Kenny's Castaways; Sat 8
Saxophone heavy Abraham Burton squares off with deadly drummers Eric McPherson and Nasheet Waits.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements
(Le) Poisson Rouge; Sat 8
In June, alto wizard Steve Coleman dazzled at Undead Jazzfest—Winter Jazzfest’s sister event—with his signature groove labyrinths. Expect more of the same tonight.

Cheap Ways to Spend Your weekend!

Additional ways for you to explore and enjoy New York City without having to spend a lot of money, provided by Time Out New York.
Go ice-skating
Once the ice rink at Rockefeller Center (30 Rockefeller Plaza between 49th and 50th Sts; 212-332-7654, therinkatrockcenter.com) opens, on October 9, visit during lunchtime to take advantage of preholiday skating for $5 (+ $8 for skate rentals). Mon–Thu 11:30am–1pm; through Nov 4

See great theater for under a buck
On Sundays, shows at Soho Rep (46 Walker St between Broadway and Church St; 212-352-3101, sohorep.org), one of our favorite Off Broadway theaters, cost 99¢. Just make sure you stay up to speed on when they go on sale; considering that performances are typically $30, these tix understandably disappear fast.

Stretch it out
The price of yoga in NYC can cause more stress then the practice relieves, but weekly Community Classes at Integral Yoga Institute of New York (227 W 13th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves; 212-929-0585, iyiny.org; $5) won’t break the bank. A beginners’ class is offered on Saturdays (6:15–7:45pm), with experienced beginners catered to on Tuesdays (9:15–10:45am) and advanced stretchers on Wednesdays (6:15–7:45pm), all for the same price. The institute will even provide you with a mat, and there’s no need to preregister.

Catch live music in Williamsburg
Every night, lively crowds and worldly grooves turn Zebulon (258 Wythe Ave between Metropolitan Ave and North 3rd St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-218-6934, zebuloncafeconcert.com; 9pm; by donation) into a sophisticated party spot, where you can expect everything from indie’s finest doing a solo gig to a dude bashing a drum while careening through the crowd.

Where To Go, Greenwich Village Edition

What to do?: The endless selection of shops, cafes, and bars are the reasons that Greenwich Village remains one of New Yorks most popular neighborhoods.

Where to go?: Tonight at Le Poisson Rouge, there will be a Freedom Party. There you will find live music and a dance-athon!

Where to Eat?: The Spotted Pig (314 W 11th St [Greenwich Street],) is another local favorite that offers good food at an affordable price.
