What are you thankful for? - A writing exercise.

By: Isabel Solano.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It is a day to be grateful for what we have and where we are. Gratitude is important all year round but Thanksgiving offers us the opportunity to be thankful as a family and as a community. Here at NYLC, we know we're thankful for all our wonderful students and teachers and we would love to know, what are you grateful for?

We all have something to be thankful and writing creates space for reflexion and in our case, of course, for English practice! Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving in your home country or not, this writing exercise is the perfect opportunity to put your thoughts into writing and practice your English writing skills. It is important that you practice your English by talking about what matters to you!

We know that taking the first step is the hardest part so we have put together a series of prompts* to inspire you.

But before you get started, here are some guidelines:

1. Write as much or as little as you'd like! There's no limit and there's no minimum.
2. Don't overthink** it! Relax, put pen to paper*** and just start!
3. Do not worry about being perfect or about making mistakes. It's all part of the writing process.
4. Look up the words you want to use but don't know in English. This will help you increase your vocabulary.
5. Ask your teacher to check your writing and give you feedback! They will be more than happy to help!

Now, here are the prompts:

Happy writing everyone! ❤

Make a list of 20 things you are thankful for.

Make a list of things that remind you of Thanksgiving.

Describe your perfect Thanksgiving day.

If you had a pet turkey, where would you keep it? How would you take care of it?

What does being thankful mean to you?

Write a letter to a family member and share what you are thankful for.

Make a list of foods you are thankful to have on Thanksgiving.

What is something you are thankful for this year, that is different than last year?

* prompt: idea as starting point.
