NYLC's Word of the Week: ODYSSEY

WORD OF THE WEEK

odyssey (noun)

 1.  a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune

Example:

This man can tell you about his odyssey from his country to the U.S.A., from poverty to affluence.

2.  an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest

Examples:

·       an odyssey of self-discovery
·       a spiritual odyssey from disbelief to faith

Extra info: Ever since Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey told the story of warrior Odysseus’s ten-year journey home from Troy, odyssey has meant any epic journey.

As with the word journey, odyssey has both a literal meaning and a figurative one. A cross-country drive in which your car breaks down can be an odyssey, but so can the journey from orientation to finals in the freshman year of college.
