New York Life by Johnny, a NYLC Student & Intern!

Hi, My name’s Johnny.  I come from China and have been in New York for 6 months. Time flies. I can still remember how disappointed I was 6 months ago when I couldn't find any graduate school  to enroll in because my English wasn't good enough. However, I decided to come to New York anyway. I had already quit my job, and I had no choice but to move on.  I found New York Language Center (NYLC), and contacted them. Soon after I found myself in Manhattan as an English student. However, my goal was still far from me.

New York is a big city. There are so many buildings, traffic, tourists, businessmen, students, even homeless people. Sometimes I feel very tiny. New York is a diverse city. The people I have seen in New York are from all over the world. Everyone is different, therefore, no one is different. New York is a great city. A lot of people say New York is a place where dreams come true. For me, I will say New York is a place where the people give so much effort into their jobs or work. So New York is a place where impossibles become possible.

After 6 months, I’m still here in New York as an English student. But I know some things inside myself have changed, I feel confident about my future, and I’m glad I made the right decision to come here. I met so many ambitious people here, they encourage me to work harder and harder on my English, I didn’t waste my last 6 months, I took TOEFL test three times, and the GRE test twice. In the meantime, I am doing an internship at NYLC; working with native English speakers really helps me improve my English. So far, I have applied to seven graduate schools this year. I think I am walking continually toward my goal. I love this city more and more, as this city gives me more and more passion.

Tips for Learning English in New York

NYLC Midtown

by Gokay

I have been studying at NYLC for 17 weeks. I think studying at NYLC has some opportunities to improve my English. For instance, during these weeks, I joined lots of school activities and met lots of excellent friends and teachers. In addition to English, I learned Spanish, Japanese and Chinese words from my friends. During these weeks, I think my English has improved because in my first day when I tried to talk with people it was really hard to understand and communicate but now, every thing is more easy and also, I like watching American TV series. When I was in Turkey, I always watched them with Turkish subtitles, but now I can watch some of them without subtitles and with English subtitles. That’s amazing!

Indian food & ice skating with Antonio

Hi guys!

This is Antonio writing again. I am back to tell you my experiences in two wonderful activities that I had with New York Language Center.

The first one was a trip to the Indian food culture: located in one of the best places in Jackson Heights, the restaurant is really comfortable; in addition to that, it was an all-you-can-eat restaurant, with a self-service system. When I entered the place, I thought I was in India. One of the reasons is because the restaurant put a really good smell in the air, with fascinating decorations; besides, the Indian regional music added a peaceful environment to that place. While I was getting my food, I realized that Indian food has a big variety.

I got salad, noodles, and chicken curry for myself, but the best food of the lunch was definitely the nan (an Indian mix of bread and pizza) that was on the table, really soft and crunchy, with a light taste. The water in this restaurant was for free. In the end, I found it a great experience; I ate a lot, and it was less than $15, so the place was really worth it.

My experience in New York by Antonio Liu

Hello!

At Time Square with Mickey and Minnie=)

My name is Antonio Liu. I am a 21-year-old student from Brazil. Currently, I am studying Business Administration at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. I started to study English when I was seven years old in English courses. However, the main reason why my English has improved day by day, was because of my big hunger for learning English. Besides the fact that I really love everything related to US culture, like the TV shows, musics and films. Therefore, English was always included in my leisure time.

I always wanted to interact with  native American speakers, like a real experience. That's why I decided to take a trip by myself, to sharpen my English even more and live like an American citizen. The easiest part was to choose the city that I was going to stay, the Big Apple!

During my experience in New York I could list the 5 things that I loved about this city:

  • Time Square: While I was wandering through the streets, I was mesmerized by the tall buildings and the lights; it seemed like in a dream. Now I understand, why New York is called the city that never sleeps. Moreover the musicals in Time Square are by far the best ones, fascinating like an unforgettable experience.
  • Central Park: October was autumn, so I got to see golden trees, which make the place even more beautiful. I thought I was in the set of a film because the park is so beautiful and peaceful that I was willing to stay there forever.
  • The Museums: Only in New York, we can find a lot of great museums. During my stay here, I have only been to two of them, The Museum of Modern Art and The Museum of Natural History. The first one is dedicated entirely to contemporary art, I realized that is host to an impressive collection of moden artistic efforts, in a variety of media including paintings, sculpture, design and even films. The second one, from what I saw, I think it was more like an exhibition museum, In addition to that, it is a really big museum, with rare and old things that have been kept for a long time.
